Level 3 Chargers vs. Levels 1 & 2
Level 3 EV charging uses direct current and operates at a much higher voltage than level 1 and 2 chargers. This is why level 3 chargers are for commercial use, typically in office, city, and shopping center parking areas.
They’re too powerful for most residential electrical systems, which run on alternating current and can’t handle the loads needed for level 3 charging.
Level 1 and 2 electric vehicle chargers are the most common residential chargers; they’re limited by the power of a home’s electrical system.
A level 2 charger can fill up an electric car’s battery at a rate of 10 to 20 miles per hour, while a level 1 charger will do so at a much slower rate of 4 to 5 miles per hour.
A level 3 charger is different in two key ways.
- It uses direct current instead of alternating current.
- It operates at a much higher voltage than level 1 and 2 chargers.
The amount of power a level 3 charger can supply depends on the voltage of the electrical system it’s connected to. A level 3 charger connected to a 400-volt electrical system provides up to 25 kilowatts of power, while a charger connected to a 480-volt system produces up to 50 kilowatts.
This high voltage “empowers” a level 3 charger to fill up an electric car’s battery much faster than levels 1 and 2. A level 3 charger provides 75 to 1,200 miles of range per hour of charging, which is enough to charge a vehicle in just 30 minutes.
The high power levels of level 3 chargers also demand a dedicated circuit. Installing a level 3 charger in a home would require running a new line from the electrical panel to the charger, which is expensive and disruptive.
How Often Should a Level 3 Charger Be Serviced?
